The teachers should try to find out what the children needs to learn while they are in the classroom. These print-rich learning should be related with their learning concept.

(iii). Labels and identify different things in the classroom e.g. books, pens, pencils, bags, benches, desks, tables, chairs, chalks, boards, dusters, doors, windows, etc.
(iv). Name and count the different things that available in the classroom, and so on.

👉 Print-rich environments-. Centers included writing tables, functional signs, and symbols that stimulated children to use literacy. Signs that had meaning for children (not mere decoration) helped to communicate the important message that literacy was an integral part of daily activity.
👉A "Cozy Corner" library book-. Each center had a place where children could sit in cozy, small spaces and read together. Often these spaces included soft things, such as stuffed animals, pillows, and dolls, so that even a child alone could feel welcome to read.
👉Literacy-related play areas-. Props, such as memo pads, recipes, and cookbooks, helped children incorporate print in a very natural way.
👉 Interactive circle times-. In contrast to being read to, children could actively participate in reading aloud. Teachers would stop, ask questions, encourage discussion of ideas, raise new questions based on children's comments, and generate a participatory role in reading with children.
👉Interactive meal times-. Teachers sat with children and engaged them in conversation during meals and snack times. Often this time became an opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with children, to hear about their daily activities outside of the center, and to connect their home and center worlds.
👉Small-group activities-. Teachers would engage children in reading, writing, handwriting, or math activities in small groups.

2. Alphabet charts: Alphabet charts let children see what letters exist, and you can use them to help match letters to sounds. Make and display different kinds of alphabet charts. Draw pictures for each letter that would be meaningful to the children – or better still, ask each child to draw a picture for each letter and use these to create your own alphabet charts. Children love to make an alphabet picture of themselves using the first letter in their name.
3. Lots to read: Be a collector of things to read that others have finished reading! But make sure that you will want to use whatever you collect. Collect newspapers and magazines, menus from take-away outlets, information pamphlets, train or bus timetables and old greeting cards. These sometimes contain interesting things to read, can be props to act with or can be cut up and used by the children when they make their own cards, pictures etc. Ask friends and family to donate a book to your classroom when it is their birthday.
4. Be a role model: Read to and with the children. Write for and with the children.

By displaying a variety of print around the classroom, including print created by students and also showing them how to use this print and encourage them to use it. As well as by creating daily routines or exciting activities such as making posters, colourful charts, word wall, and so on that demonstrate the purpose of this print. In multilingual classroom, it is important that I use both students' home languages along with the school language for this print.

Making posters using drawings or pictures from old magazines and newspapers. We can also write our own message or slogan in one, two or more languages.
Make posters using rhymes, songs and riddles in different languages. Ask the children and their family members for suggestions and use ones we know.
Read them with the children, pointing to the words as they read.
Encourage the children to read and re-read them by themselves or with friends.
Allow the children to copy the posters and make their own small versions to take home and share with their families.
Display posters where the children can see them easily. Remember to replace them regularly so that the children do not become bored by them.
Alphabet charts
Alphabet charts let children see what letters exist, and we can use them to help match letters to sounds. Make and display different kinds of alphabet charts. Draw pictures for each letter that would be meaningful to the children at the club – or better still, ask each child to draw a picture for each letter and use these to create our own alphabet charts. Lots to read
Be a collector of things to read that others have finished reading. Collect newspapers and magazines, menus from take-away outlets, information pamphlets, train or bus timetables and old greeting cards. These sometimes contain interesting things to read, can be props to act with or can be cut up and used by the children when they make their own cards, pictures etc. Ask friends and family to donate a book to your reading club when it is their birthday.
Be a role model
One of the reading club volunteer’s tasks is to be a role model for reading and writing. Read to and with the children. Write for and with the children.

ReplyDeleteIn order to create such environment our classroom need to filled up with various types of printed materials such as posters, different types of colourful chart (e.g alphabets,numbers,animals) notices,newspaper,magazine and story books will foster better learning, thinking and reading skills.
A classroom that is print rich exposes and engages students in the seven processes of literary for a variety of authentic everyday purposes across the content areas.

ReplyDeleteTo create such an environment for children in my classroom,I can make posters using drawings/pictures from old magazines and newspapers.I can make Alphabet charts and let children see what letters exist and I can use them to help match letters to sounds.I will then read them with the children and point to the words as I read.I would encourage them to read and re-read them by themselves or with friends.

Print rich learning environment is a place or classroom where there are lots of printed materials such as books, charts, posters, bulletin boards, drawings etc. They should also be colorful and attractive at the same time. If the classroom is spacious a different area for a library can be kept where story books (with illustrations) and activity books can be kept where children can draw, read and learn from printed materials.
