  4. The language given in textbook is that of english. But the children are used to their home language. This creates a barrier of difference in their day to day. There is a vast difference between the language spoken by children in my class and that of the language used in their textbook. Being from various background, children have a difficulty to immediately grasp the language given in their textbook. They have to be translated word by word in different language, in order to grab and interest them in their textbook. It is only after they have taken a liking towards something, that the children make an effort to learn it. Gradual introduction of the new language will greatly help them.

Children do find it challenging to study a foreign language initially but with their exposure to the language through T.V, internet or even friends or acquaintances, they do pick up the language quite well.
However, children should also be encouraged to speak and learn their native language as well, so as to ingrain in them their sense of identity.

  27. Many children do not find their own language represented in their school and need to learn almost entirely through an unfamiliar language. Study estimate that around 25% of children in primary school face severe learning disadvantage due to the gap between their home language and their school language. Consequently these children end up learning in a language that they do not speak or understand. This prevents them from meaningful engaging with teaching learning processes in school, which are in turn lead to feeling of helplessness and low self esteem that effect their self confidence and identity which leads to negative impact on their academic performance.

  39. In most urban schools, textbooks in English language are introduced right from the start of schooling. English is a foreign language which is totally different from local Indian languages. This, in itself, has already become a burden for learners who have just started school.

Let us take an example of a student named Little ‘xyz’ from the suburb who had just cleared Class IV and is enrolled in Class V of an urban school. Coming from a school where local language is taught in most subjects, Little ‘xyz’ has to get used to English which is taught in nearly all the subjects. Learning for this child will take much longer time as compared to his/her counterparts who are already getting used to English language. He/She may suffer low grades which may hamper progress in the long run. Even communicating with peers and teachers will be a problem since a language barrier exists between them. Speaking, reading and writing skills will be much affected if not properly handled by a competent teacher.

As students speak, write, and represent, they also listen to, read, and view the ideas and experiences of others.A language textbook is not merely a collection of texts drawn from different genres; it reflects a particular pedagogic point of view arrived at by the textbook designers after taking into account the broad educational objectives that inform the curriculum

So I've seen children in my class mostly interacting in their mother tongue with their peers except if they come from a different community speaking a different language then they communicate in English. Since the medium of instruction in our school is English, the textbooks are also in English. Children do also speak in English and understand it but difficult words from the textbook need to be explained to them in a simpler manner.
