  39. The indigenous toys/ learning materials that are available in my place are bamboo sticks, stone, soil, sand, clay, rocks, plants, leaves, waste materials like papers, magazines, old clothes, plastic bottles, plastic, paper boxes, etc.
    From these available materials we can teach children to learn Mathematics, Science, English, Arts and crafts, etc.

    Examples:
    In mathematics children can learn number counting, addition, subtraction, sizes, shapes, etc.

    In science we can teach children about the natural resources, plants, animals, living and non-living things, etc. that are available in the environment.

    In English we can teach children to develop their language skills by learning their names and different types of nouns.

    From the available materials we can teach children about the Arts and crafts, shapes, colours and motor skills.

  40. Bamboo tree is one of the famous indigeneous resource of Meghalaya. Such a resource can be used as a teaching aid in capturing the students attention. Bamboo trees can be cut down into 4 equal lengths and tied the ends together with a thread to make square. In this way students can learn how to count and recognize that there are 4 sides in a square. The students can now learn the various shapes using bamboo tree. There are a number of ways which we can use bamboo tree as a teaching aid.

  41. When I was in standard 1, my teacher used small bamboo sticks to enable us to understand the concepts of division,addition,substraction,multiplication etc.
    For instance,if 9 was to be devided by 3, she would take 9 sticks and made them into three groups wlth 3 sticks each so on and so forth.

  63. The wooden top or ‘Latom’ is one of the traditional doll toys played by children in some parts of Meghalaya particularly in the Khasi Hills. It is made up of a cone-shaped piece of wood with a piece of iron nail fixed at the bottom. The toy can be played by winding a string in a single, continuous spiraled layer from the nail back up the body toward the middle or thickest portion of the top. With practice, it can be set to spin by throwing on the ground or any flat surface without releasing the string. A very interesting toy which can be played by a group of children. The Latom helps in developing -

    • creativity.
    • communication and self-expression skills.
    • fine motor skills.
    • social emotional skills.
