Helping to keep your children healthy at school through good hygiene.
Whether your child is starting school for the first time or returning after the holidays, mixing with lots of other children will expose him or her to many more germs than there are at home. While you can’t prevent contact with all germs (and remember that exposure to some germs is a good thing), you can help reduce the risk of your child picking up an infection through healthy hygiene habits.

How do germs spread at school?
School children often pick up cold and flu viruses or tummy bugs that can lead to diarrhoea. These infections can spread very quickly from child to child by touching a contaminated surface. Germs also spread very quickly in the air via coughs and sneezes, as well as by eating contaminated food.

    Why is good hygiene important?
Once your child becomes infected, germs can quickly spread to the rest of your family at home. Bouts of the common cold and upset tummies are common at the start of a new term – both in schools and families. So, helping your child understand about good hygiene will go a long way to helping them and the rest of your family stay healthy.

Avoid spreading cold and flu viruses
Although vaccinations can protect your child from some serious diseases such as tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, injections cannot protect children from every type of harmful bacteria.

Top tips for good school hygiene

    1. Keep hands clean
Thorough hand washing is the single most effective way to help prevent the spread of infections in schools. Teach your children how and when to wash their hands (rubbing the hands together for at least 20 seconds using soap and clean running water). Always wash hands:

    After using the toilet
    Before eating
    After playing outside
    After touching something dirty
After coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose
    After touching a dirty tissue
    After petting/stroking animals
    Whenever hands look dirty
Put a pack of Dettol Hand Sanitiser in your child’s bag or lunch bag so that they remember to use it before eating.

    2. Coughs and sneezes spread diseases
Teach your children to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing to stop germs from becoming airborne. Throw used tissues in a bin and always wash hands with soap and water afterwards.

If there isn’t a tissue available, encourage your child to sneeze or cough into the crook of their elbow instead of their hands, to reduce the spread of bacteria.

    3. Healthy diet
Whether your child has a packed lunch or a school dinner, a varied and balanced diet will help protect their health and promote proper growth and development. Eating properly also aids concentration during lessons.

  166. Good hygiene is not just using hand sanitizer, it’s a way of thinking that spans across all aspects of child care. Hygiene means all the practices to follow and maintain cleanliness, sanitation and good health. This can include everything from frequent hand washing, to food safety protocols, to staying home when sick. Even exercise and regular sleep can be considered aspects of hygiene.
Teaching the basics of proper personal hygiene is important for keeping children healthy and clean on daily basis. It's especially important for children to practice good hygiene-- handwashing in particular- because they spend so much of their time in close contact with each other in the classroom, sharing everything from desks, to chairs, to crayons, to terms.

If I have to monitor a child on a daily basis their physical appearance says it all. Right from the time the child enter the school campus as an educator I would observer the child and notices it and also talk to the parents which is important as a child is dependent on their parents for everything so parents must be taken into account.
The second thing that as an educator I would do is everyday in class I would check their nails and their uniform. I would also have an interactive session on how to maintain cleanliness of oneself.
While in school I will make sure that the children washes their hands after using the washroom, and also before taking their lunch. After coming back from their lunch break or from their games activities I would make them wash their hands.
These are small steps that as an educator I would do to endure hygienic practices

We as teachers should always instill in children the need and practices of personal hygiene in everyday life. Some of my thoughts to ensure that children are following hygienic practices on a daily basis may be stated below: i. we should regularly monitor the children that they must wear clean uniform and also clean innerwear. ii. Nails should be trim regularly to keep them short and clean. iii. We should always make sure that their school bags are also clean and also that no remnants of food items should be left in the bags. iv. Basic etiquette of using handkerchief whenever the children are coughing or sneezing should be taught and be reminded regularly to all the children. v. Thorough hand washing should always be taught(rubbing together of hands for atleast 20 seconds with soap and water) when: a) After using the toilet. b) Before and after eating. c) After playing outside. d) After coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose. vi. Eating hygienic and mostly home prepared food should always be encourage to all children. We should also discourage children to eat junk food or any types of snacks that are plastic-packed and easily available in the roadside shops as these food may have an adverse affect on the health of the children.
